What is woven geotextile?

filament woven geotextile
woven geotextile fabric

Woven geotextiles are made of high-strength industrial synthetic fibers as raw materials and produced by weaving process. It is characterized by high mechanical strength such as tensile resistance, tear resistance, top burst resistance, puncture resistance, etc., which is 8 times that of staple fiber geotextile of the same gram weight, and 5 times that of polyester filament stone fabric, and its high strength characteristics are particularly suitable for strengthening, reinforcement, protection and isolation engineering: at the same time, the hydraulic performance is superior, it is a plane filtration, the void size is large, the equivalent pore size is 0.07-0.5mm, and the resistance to plugging and creep is strong, especially suitable as a filter layer for non-cohesive soil.

What are the properties of woven geotextile?

Woven geotextiles have a few standout features that make them really popular in engineering projects. First off, their high tensile strength is impressive, usually ranging from 50 to 200 kN/m, which means they can maintain structural stability in high-stress environments like road or railway subgrade reinforcement. Plus, their low elongation rate, around 5% to 15%, means they don't deform much under load, making them ideal for long-term load applications like bridge foundations.

Another big plus is their chemical resistance, especially in acidic and alkaline environments. Since they're primarily made of polypropylene or polyester fibers, they can be used in pH environments ranging from 2 to 13 without significant degradation or loss of strength. Woven geotextiles also boast excellent permeability and filtration properties, with a vertical permeability coefficient typically between 10^-4 and 10^-6 cm/s, which makes them perform well in erosion control and underground drainage systems.

Their friction coefficient isn't low either, usually around 0.8 to 1.0, effectively preventing slippage, especially on steep slopes. Additionally, they're highly durable, with good UV resistance, and can last over 20 years even when exposed to sunlight, making them a top choice for projects requiring long-term exposure or durability. Lastly, they can handle dynamic loads like traffic vibrations or foundation settlements without significant performance drop, which makes them suitable for use in highways, railways, and bridges.

Use Scenario

Case 1: Foundation Reinforcement Project for a Highway in California, USA

In a foundation reinforcement project for a highway in California, USA, the construction unit used polyester woven geotextile with a tensile strength of 50 kN/m. The use of woven geotextile effectively enhanced the bearing capacity of the foundation, preventing settlement and cracking. The project started in May 2021 and was successfully completed in June 2022.

Case 2: Riverbank Protection Project in Vancouver, Canada

In a riverbank protection project in Vancouver, Canada, the construction unit used polypropylene woven geotextile for protection. The good permeability and high strength of the woven geotextile effectively prevented soil erosion, protecting the stability of the riverbank. The project started in July 2020 and was completed in May 2021.

Case 3: Ecological Slope Protection Project in Sydney, Australia

In an ecological slope protection project in Sydney, Australia, woven geotextile was used for slope protection. The construction unit chose polypropylene woven geotextile with a tensile strength of 40 kN/m and planted vegetation on it, successfully preventing soil erosion and protecting the ecological environment. The project started in April 2019 and was completed in March 2020.

Lesser-Known Knowledge About Woven Geotextile

Woven geotextile, made by weaving fiber strands (typically polypropylene or polyester) into a mesh-like structure, is widely used in civil engineering. However, some lesser-known facts about woven geotextiles might not be commonly recognized:

1. Balance of High Strength and Low Elongation

  • Lesser-Known Fact: The high strength of woven geotextiles typically comes with low elongation. Compared to non-woven geotextiles, woven geotextiles exhibit lower extensibility when stretched, meaning they do not deform significantly under stress. This characteristic makes them particularly suitable for projects that require stability and shape retention, such as subgrade reinforcement.
  • Parameter Details: Woven geotextiles usually have a tensile strength of 50-200 kN/m, with an elongation rate as low as 5-15%.

2. Excellent Chemical Resistance

  • Lesser-Known Fact: Woven geotextiles perform exceptionally well in chemically corrosive environments, especially in acidic and alkaline soil conditions. Since they are primarily made from polypropylene or polyester fibers, these materials inherently possess strong chemical resistance, making them suitable for long-term use in contaminated sites or environments containing chemical substances.
  • Application Examples: Chemical plant foundations, landfill sites, and contaminated soil remediation projects.

3. Combination of Filtration and Reinforcement Functions

  • Lesser-Known Fact: Woven geotextiles can simultaneously provide soil separation and reinforcement functions. This dual capability is particularly advantageous for engineers designing multifunctional structures, especially in situations where both soil strength enhancement and drainage are required.
  • Parameter Details: Woven geotextiles typically have a permeability coefficient ranging from 10^-4 to 10^-6 cm/s, while offering reinforcement strength up to 200 kN/m.

4. Impact of Friction Coefficient and Surface Roughness

  • Lesser-Known Fact: Woven geotextiles have higher surface roughness and friction coefficients compared to non-woven geotextiles. This is particularly significant for projects requiring greater frictional resistance. For example, when used in conjunction with geomembranes, the high friction coefficient of woven geotextiles helps improve overall structural stability, preventing slippage.
  • Parameter Details: Woven geotextiles can have a friction coefficient as high as 0.8-1.0, which is crucial in slope protection and revetment projects.

5. Durability and UV Resistance

  • Lesser-Known Fact: The durability of woven geotextiles extends beyond resistance to aging and chemical corrosion; it also includes UV resistance. While most geotextiles are intended for buried use, woven geotextiles can maintain a long service life even when exposed to sunlight.
  • Application Examples: Temporary roads exposed to the elements, protective works in heavily weathered areas.

6. Adaptability to Dynamic Loads

  • Lesser-Known Fact: Woven geotextiles are highly adaptable to dynamic loads, such as traffic vibrations or foundation settlements. Their unique woven structure allows them to maintain stable performance under repeated loading conditions.
  • Application Examples: Reinforcement of highways, railway subgrades, and bridge foundations.
