In Peru, one of the largest copper mining projects required an advanced tailings containment solution. The mining site was located in the Andes Mountains, an area with a harsh environment characterized by high altitudes, extreme temperatures, and seasonal rainfall. The main challenge was to contain tailings and toxic leachate while maintaining environmental safety and meeting strict Peruvian regulations on water contamination and waste disposal.
After evaluating various materials, the project team decided to use PVC geomembrane due to its chemical resistance, durability, and ease of installation. The project covered approximately 50,000 m² of tailings storage area.

The PVC geomembrane selected for this project was designed to meet the specific requirements of mining waste containment in Peru’s extreme conditions.
The 1.0 mm thickness was chosen for its sufficient strength, flexibility, and puncture resistance, which were essential for the mining tailings pond, where chemical leaching could be a risk.
The installation of the PVC geomembrane followed a structured process to ensure its efficiency and longevity under the mining site's harsh conditions.
The site preparation process included:
Excavation and leveling of the tailings pond area.
Soil compaction to ensure a stable foundation for the geomembrane.
Removal of rocks and sharp objects that could potentially puncture the geomembrane.
The PVC geomembrane rolls were carefully unrolled along the prepared surface to minimize wrinkles and tension.
Seams were aligned and overlapping by at least 100 mm to ensure strong, watertight joins.
Hot-air welding was used to join the geomembrane sheets, ensuring an airtight and watertight seal.
Extrusion welding was applied for high-stress areas such as corners, transitions, and pipe penetrations.
Welds were tested through vacuum box tests, pressure tests, and visual inspection to ensure they met quality standards.
Anchor trenches were dug along the geomembrane edges to secure the liner and prevent movement from environmental forces.
Backfilling with soil ensured the geomembrane remained in place, even under fluctuating water levels.
A comprehensive quality control program was implemented throughout the installation, including the following tests:
Tensile Strength Testing on geomembrane samples.
Seam Strength Testing through peel tests and shear tests.
Permeability Testing to ensure the geomembrane met the required <1.0 × 10⁻¹³ cm/s leakage rate.
Visual Inspection under controlled conditions to detect any potential defects.
These tests ensured the geomembrane would perform effectively for over 25 years without significant degradation.
After installation, the PVC geomembrane performed exceptionally well in containing tailings and preventing the migration of leachate. Key outcomes included:
Zero leakage: The liner successfully isolated the tailings from surrounding soil and groundwater, meeting all regulatory requirements for environmental protection.
Chemical resistance: The PVC geomembrane showed strong resistance to acids, alkalines, and salts commonly found in mining wastewater.
UV resistance: The black color and UV stabilizers provided long-term durability against the intense sun exposure in the high-altitude region.
Operational performance: The geomembrane’s flexibility allowed it to adapt to ground movements without cracking or breaking, which is crucial for dynamic mining environments.
Cost-efficiency: PVC geomembrane's quick installation and low maintenance reduced overall project costs and improved project timelines.
The use of PVC geomembrane for mining tailings containment in Peru has had significant environmental benefits:
Groundwater protection: Preventing leachate from seeping into the ground ensures that nearby water supplies remain safe.
Durable and sustainable: The long-lasting performance of the PVC geomembrane helps reduce the need for frequent replacements, thus contributing to sustainable mining practices.
Recyclable material: At the end of its life, PVC geomembrane can be recycled, reducing environmental waste.
The successful installation of PVC geomembrane for the mining tailings pond in Peru showcases its strength, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness in mining projects. By offering superior containment, UV protection, and long-term durability, PVC geomembrane proves to be a reliable solution for mining waste management in challenging environments.
For mining companies and environmental protection projects, PVC geomembrane remains a preferred material choice, ensuring both environmental safety and economic efficiency.
